About the Work
Four feet tall, stainless steel pine cone is set vertically on a block of stone. Pine cones have no flower or fruit, rather, the ovule/seeds are contained in the woody scales of the female cones. This cone sculpture is a receptacle for seeds but is intended, as well, as a container for wood and a wood fire. The cone can be removed from its plinth and placed on the ground. Elzinga completed a BFA at NSCAD and studied Earth Sciences at McMaster University. Elzinga’s pine cone sculptures have been featured as part of Toronto’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche celebration of contemporary art, and his work is held in collections across Ontario including the City of Ottawa, the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Toronto.
