About Athabasca Black 2/10

This powerful minimalist outdoor sculpture is by Philippe Pallafray. Forged in stainless steel and painted in jet black, the tall pillar’s angled and highly polished, jagged edges are designed to shine in the sunlight. The Quebec artist ascribed meaning to the reflected light by referencing the writing of the Montreal born poet and musician Leonard Cohen—‘there is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” The sculpture is named ‘Athabasca’ after a geological sample of ice. One of a series.

“My geometrically shaped sculptures, whose angles and planes resemble Japanese origami, oppose the strength of metal with the fragility of paper. “ Philippe Pallafray

He is a member of the Sculptors Society of Canada. Born in France, he emigrated to Canada several years ago and currently lives in Ile d’Orléans, Québec.
