Biography

Mitchell was born in Clarksburg, Ontario. He studied under William Cruickshank, George Reid and Frederick S. Challener at the Central Ontario School of Art in Toronto and went on to continue his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Mitchell worked in oil and watercolours and is widely known for his landscapes, particularly those of the Georgian Bay area. Mitchell worked as a commercial artist with Brigdens in Toronto and as a book and magazine illustrator for the Toronto Star, Macleans magazine and other private authors. He was President of the Society of Graphic Artists and exhibited with the Art Association of Montreal and the Royal Canadian Academy. His work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. Mitchell died in Barrie, Ontario in 1958.
