Abstract artist, Andrew Lui's ethereal work is rooted in history; that of his own in China and the world around him. Influenced by both the fluid lines and vivid colours of the French impressionist, Matisse and early Western abstract artists such as Kandinsky, Lui has spent decades exploring both the agony and ecstasy of life expressed now in his recent work. 'Anthem' is one of several paintings in a new series where he continues to use the natural, elegant movement of horses and their riders to interpret the human journey. The use of typically Eastern materials, delicate rice paper and the black inks of calligraphy marry the swirling acrylic paints visibly energizing the piece. "I think my paintings are romantic, and very poetic but not a love letter…." Andrew Lui Born in Guangzhou, China, Lui participated in the Chinese Cultural Revolution as a member of the Red Guard but escaped to Hong Kong in 1970. Making his way to Toronto, Lui studied at the Ontario College of Art before traveling to the UK, and Italy. In Florence, he was drawn to the dynamic Uccello's Battle of San Romano (c. 1456). Lui moved from China to Canada in 1972 and now lives in Montreal. He studied art in Italy, the UK and Canada from 1972 to 1975. His work is in private and corporate collections in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia. Framed dimesions are 71.75 x 39.5 inches.
