Vantage Point: Portholes (Pier) April Hickox
- Chromogenic Print
- 24 × 20 inches
60.96 × 50.8 cm
Skyscrapers and a cloudy, light blue sky appear over an industrial facade of a shipping yard pier in this intimate chromogenic photograph. This image is one of a series of landscape photographs was taken from the porthole of a ship sailing the St. Lawrence River from I^les de la Madeleine to the Port of Montreal. Hickox presents the porthole as a viewing device mimicking a lens, isolating observation and the movement of the ship. The porthole replaces the framing mechanism of the camera, while the movement of the ship provides a constructed vantage point for viewing. The distortions in color and the markings on the images are caused by both the thickness of the porthole’s glass as well as the effects of salt water and weathering. This chromogenic print is one in a series of 15 photographs. They are available individually or as a set. This work is in an edition of 7.
