About Side by Side

Bold painting of the Canadian and American flags dancing from the same pole on a sky blue ground. This political work speaks to continued friendly relations between neighboring countries. Other similar series of the Canadian and American flags produced by Pachter hang in the Canadian Embassy in Washington, as well as in Canada House in London.

In flying the flags from the same pole and placing one below the other, the artist has broken the rules regarding flags for both nations. Pachter is known for merging playful even irreverent elements with deeply iconic imagery.

Pop art inspired, the work celebrates and elevates popular, media filtered imagery. It is a unique political work from an admired Canadian artistic polymath.

Graduate of University of Toronto and the Sorbonne-Paris, Charles Pachter is a leading contemporary Canadian artist. Pachter is a prestigious Officer of the Order of Canada, a Chevalier of France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and twice a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee medal. He has honorary Doctorate degrees from the Ontario College of Art & Design University, University of Toronto and Brock University. His paintings are in public and private collections around the world. Pachter is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer, historian and author.
