Canadian contemporary artist Charles Pachter has always been fascinated by his country’s history. In this painting, he has reproduced a faithful likeness of the 18th century British Military Officer, John Graves Simcoe, the first Lt. Governor of Upper Canada. (Ontario) “They were intrepid. I mean John Graves Simcoe had fought against George Washington, became a member of Parliament in England and lobbied to become the First Lieutenant Governor of the newly created province of Upper Canada…. it is a fascinating period and it interested me as a twenty-first century artist. How did these people manage?” Charles PachterPachter is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, designer and author and is a graduate of the University of Toronto and the Sorbonne-Paris. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, a Chevalier of France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and twice a recipient of the Queen's Jubilee medal. He has honorary Doctorate degrees from the Ontario College of Art & Design, the University of Toronto and Brock University. Charles Pachter’s paintings are in public and private collections around the world.
