Canadian sculptor Cheryl Wilson-Smith takes daily one-hour walks in the ancient boreal forests that surround her home in Red Lake, Ontario. Her beautiful glass frit (special ground glass) finely layered sculptures are inspired by her love and respect for nature and that’s reflected in the colour, form and texture of her work. This striking outdoor piece…circles of red glass in varying sizes and heights, mounted on steel rods provides a window that invites the viewer to look through the circle. What do you see through the looking glass? “The circle is a guide to allow you to look more carefully…notice what’s around you in a more detailed way. On my recent walks I noticed things that I hadn’t really seen before. This shift in perspective is almost meditative.” Cheryl Wilson-Smith She was the 2014 winner of the RBC Award for Glass through the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. Wilson-Smith has received nine grants from the Ontario Arts Council and one from the Canada Council. Commissions include the Red Lake District Heritage Centre, Margaret Cochenor Memorial Hospital Donor wall. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, in the UK and the US.
