About Stoic
Dramatic in scale and detail, this stunning glass sculpture was created by Cheryl Wilson Smith. The Canadian artist re-imagines impressions of the rugged beauty that surrounds her Northern Ontario home into glass art. This vertical piece was formed by layering wafer-thin individual pieces of glass frit (ground glass). Both the texture and the colour palette--gray, rusty orange and black recalls a rocky outcrop. Wilson Smith is pushing the limits of glass work with these remarkable sculptures.“Glass allows me to express myself as a sculptor… the layers I can create with it… the fragility but also the strength.” Cheryl Wilson Smith
She was the 2014 winner of the RBC Award for Glass through the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. Wilson-Smith has received nine grants from the Ontario Arts Council and one from the Canada Council. Commissions include the Red Lake District Heritage Centre, Margaret Cochenor Memorial Hospital Donor wall. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, in the UK and the US.
