Remarkable in design, scale and form, Canadian artist Floyd Elzinga’s series of fire pine cones are his ‘spin’ on a fire pit. These elegant outdoor sculptures are hand-forged from Corten steel which naturally acquires an attractive rust-coloured patina over time. This piece stands upright on top of an imposing chunk of stone—the stem end of the pine cone opens to reveal a metal basket for placing logs.
“My art is my forestry … I grew up on a farm and now I make metal seeds and flowers and I'm growing a metal garden." Floyd Elzinga
His pinecone sculptures have been featured as part of Toronto’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche celebration of contemporary art, and his work is held in collections across Ontario and in the US. Elzinga received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in Halifax, NS.
