About 60-30 Split

An imposing abstract sculpture in polished stainless steel is one of Canadian artist Gord Smith’s latest works. Born in Montreal in 1937, Smith became renowned as one of the finest sculptors in post war Canada. He continues to create from a studio in Toronto and remains one of our country’s most important living artists.

“A work of art does not need interpretation. It does not matter who or what I am, it is the work that is important—it should be timeless and with a power of its own. If it speaks, it will be heard and what I say about it is not important.” Gord Smith

He studied Architecture and Engineering at Sir George Williams University and went on to work with an architectural firm in Montreal. In 1967, he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA). Commissions and collaborations with renowned architects followed. In the 1970’s and the early 1990’s he took on teaching roles at universities in Victoria and Hamilton. Smith's work is in collections of major institutions including the National Gallery of Canada and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and more.
