Two glazed ceramic heads are face up and fused together in this dramatic sculpture by Gráinne McHugh. Drawn across the heads is a tableau of humanity crammed together and full of pathos. “Everyone has a sense that, globally, politically, we’re in a perfect storm ... I’m not primarily concerned with making policy statements about this or that subject as I am in the emotional undertow and the need to hold out a hope that is higher than the high-water mark.” Gráinne McHugh (b. 1982 Drogheda) trained as an artist in Ireland and has exhibited extensively in South Africa — where she lived for several years. She has been part of exhibitions in Germany, Ireland, and Portugal. Her first solo show was in North America in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. McHugh’s work is held in private collections in Canada, Ireland, and South Africa.
