About the Work

An actual straw hand broom dipped in green floats at an angle beneath embossed words "OUR WORLD NEEDS A GREEN SWEEP" in this formed clear plastic bas relief wall sculpture. This piece, typical of Iain Baxterand's pop-concept work, is a critique of contemporary consumer culture. The artist who changed his name legally from Baxter to Baxterand has been dubbed Mr. Concept by Canadian Art Magazine. His irreverence that has led to comparisons with Marcel Duchamp, has also led to a much lauded career. Baxterand is an Officer of the Order of Canada, Member of the Order of Ontario, Member of the Order of British Columbia. He is recipient of the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts, the Canada Council Arts Molson Prize, the Gershon Iskowitz Prize. He has three Honorary Doctorates from Canadian universities and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. His work is in public collections across Canada including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
