Four figures, three women and one older man, are depicted in this painting. The drama within the painting is ambiguous. Is the woman putting an envelope into her purse or pulling it out? Was she just handed it, or is she about to give it to someone? Are the two who are looking the other way oblivious or deliberately refusing to see what is going on? The painting itself is built up with many layers of paint, and as a work of art, it shows the strength of a painter at the pinnacle of their career.
