Born in England, Jennifer Hornyak moved to Canada in 1961, and she now has a vigorous studio practice in Montreal. Her figurative compositions are built up through a complex technique of rich green, blue, yellow, red, pink and white glazes. This portrait of an austere woman dressed in black is painted by Hornyak in a classical profile. The figure appears as if floating on a bright blue field, interspersed with soft pink and green flowers.
