About Tulips and Table

A pretty bunch of pink tulips set against a deep pink tablecloth and a bright turquoise chair against a midnight blue wall is the subject of this delightful oil painting by British artist Jennifer Hornyak. Known for her abstract and figurative work in vivid colours, Hornyak is inspired by both German Expressionism and the early 20th century French Fauvist masters such as Matisse whose style of painting used colour in non-naturalistic ways. She achieves such rich textures by applying layer upon layer of glaze.

“People think I’m painting still life. But I have to say they’re not. They’re abstractions. I use the flower as a metaphor for myself. “ Jennifer Hornyak

She studied at the Grimsby School of Art in England. In 1961, she moved to Montreal where she attended McGill University, the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal and the Centre Saidye Bronfman. Hornyak has exhibited throughout North America and Europe including the Paris World Exhibition in 1987 where her work was shown alongside that of Modigliani, Picasso and van Dongen. Hornyak’s work is represented in many private and corporate collections.
