This 1980s anthropomorphic aubergine-coloured vessel is a decorative tureen with an alluring barorque opulence. From Rothman's Ritual Vessel series, this tureen stands nearly two feet tall and encounters you with a subject-like presence that is visually and tactily appealing. Rothman was a student of Peter Voulkos at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles in the 1950s who urged his students to question the norms of traditional vessels and use clay as a sculptural medium. Throughout his career Jerry Rothman followed his varied interests and created both vessel forms and sculpture. The tureen is thrown and the legs are hand-built textured slab additions.
