About the Work

An impasto of warm paynes grey is framed by bands of umber-blue in this abstract canvas by John Fox. Created in 1976, this piece reflects his experience of Venice where textured palimpsest walls and colorful frescoes are warmed by Mediterranean light. John Fox (1927-2008) attended McGill University, the École des Beaux-arts de Montréal and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, School of Art and Design. In 1952, he studied at the Slade School of Art, University of London, followed by two years in Florence and Paris. When Fox began to spend time in Venice, his early work inspired by European Intimism gave way to large abstract canvases. Fox’s artwork is held in many private, corporate and public collections including the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the MacKenzie Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Museum London, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. "I am a painter, that's all I've done for thirty years. I've never believed in talent, only in interest, and in work. Art is a terrifically long-term thing. You find out about yourself first. The rest comes later, sometimes much later."- John Fox
