Biography

Jonathan Dunkelman is a Toronto-based painter whose colorful work brings together threads of the New New Painting movement from the late 1970s with elements of the landscape. Bright layers of acrylic color soaked into the canvas becomes the expansive ground for textured fragments of branch and twig.

"Thin layers of paint are meticulously applied with a brush revealing minute changes to geometric shapes, flat bold plains of color, and spontaneous mark-making.  The result is work that explores the nuanced relationship between impulse and preparation, nature and urban development." Jonathan Dunkelman

Dunkelman attended St. Andrew's College in Aurora and McGill University, Montreal. He has exhibited in Canada, most notably at the Museum of New in Toronto. Dunkelman's work is held in private and public collections.
