Pastel colours of luminous mauve and yellow acrylic are drawn, fan like, into a circular swath that fills the picture plane. This area is anchored at a lower centre point by passages of coral, mauve, grey and brown. The title of the work may derive from the 19th century term Realpolitik that refers to forces that shape the state and that understanding them is a source of power. Joseph Drapell, RCA, was born near Prague in 1940 and emigrated to Canada in 1966. He studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art for three years, and settled in Toronto in 1970. His work has been exhibited in Europe, the US and Canada. One of the new new painters, his work is in the Guggenheim Museum (New York), the Museum of Fine Art (Boston), the National Gallery of Prague, and many other prestigious public galleries and collections around the world.
