As a landscape artist, Julie Himel explores the world she sees and the ones she imagines in light filled canvases. Her ethereal paintings are expressive, visibly textured and often offer abstracted views of the land and sky. This piece—a view of land, trees and sky in acrylic and charcoal is rendered in a softer, more neutral palette than the Toronto artist usually favours —washes of pale blue, yellow, green, gray and a touch of deep orange. Himel is drawn to painting landscapes as a reflection of her deep concern for preserving the natural world.
“It’s a painting that explores openness….It’s about taking quiet moments of self-reflection, and yet a mutuality in the figures of trees interacting with the space and light.” Julie Himel
Julie Himel completed a BFA at York University with additional studies at the Toronto School of Art and Langara College in Vancouver. Himel has been painting professionally for more than 25 years. Her award-winning paintings can be found in private, corporate and public collections.
