Toronto’s Julie Himel is known for her evocative use of colour and abstracted form in her landscapes. This piece expresses her collective memory of a dry desert—a melange of browns highlighted by pink, mauve and green, a streak of pale blue sky in the background. A devoted environmentalist, Himel’s work is always inspired by time spent in nature. “Being in nature and then coming out of it, processing what I experienced there and then going into the studio and bringing that to life…that’s where the magic happens for me.” Julie Himel She completed a BFA at York University with additional studies at the Toronto School of Art and Langara College in Vancouver. Himel has been painting professionally for more than 20 years. Her award-winning paintings can be found in private, corporate and public collections.
