About the Work
Historically, ginger jars were used to import ginger and a variety of goods from China to the West. Typically made of porcelain, these jars had a domed lid and bulging, spherical body. The ginger jar is here re-interpreted in white stoneware clay by Loren Kaplan. The white underglaze/glaze mixture of the jar's surface is engraved with an intricate pattern. The vessel and lid are glazed and glossy inside.
