Striped Porcelain Totem Vessel No.4 Loren Kaplan
- 20 × 3.25 × 3.25 inches
50.8 × 8.26 × 8.26 cm
In this new series of tall, elegantly shaped vessels, ceramicist Loren Kaplan has found inspiration in her South African heritage. The porcelain vessels numbered one through five are boldly decorated with hand-drawn stripes in black and red reminiscent of patterns found in the African wilderness. As a ‘form,’ totems have ancient spiritual significance in indigenous cultures. (Vessels are individually priced.) “In my work I have attempted to integrate symbolic, visual, tactile and spiritual values blending form, function and meaning.” Loren Kaplan She earned a BFA from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and studied at the Kim Sacks School of Ceramics. In 1995 she established a studio and began a teaching career with the Visual Arts and Crafts Academy in Johannesburg. Kaplan has exhibited regularly in South Africa and Toronto and received numerous awards. Her work is held in many private collections and in the South African Constitutional Court Art Collection.
