About the Work
With studies in classical Greek art, architecture and mythology, Malcolm Rains explores balance, harmony and austerity in this poised black and white still life painting. Through the pronounced use of light and shadow and trompe l'oeil realism, Rains’ work seeks a mystical or conceptual connection with the viewer. The title of this contemplative work refers to the Ancient Greek mythological god of the Sun. Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands of Greece and famous for the Colossus of Rhodes. Framed dimensions are 55 x 46 inches. Born in England in 1947, Malcolm Rains emigrated to Canada in 1955. After studies in architecture at the University of Toronto and University of Detroit he completed a degree at the Ontario College of Art. Rains has been exhibited extensively throughout notable institutions across Canada including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Winnipeg Art Gallery, The Power Plant (Toronto) and the Art Gallery of Hamilton. His work is held in many private, corporate and public collections including the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Global Affairs Canada.
