About the Work
Butterflies of mauve, yellow and brown dance above a fluffy white cat in this charming painting by Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis. Framed dimensions 21.5 x 21 inches. Despite poor health, Maud Lewis depicted her surroundings with joy and humor. Created in bright, solid colors with a limited use of perspective, her work delights viewers with such subjects as winter landscapes with sleighs, deer in forest, oxen and cats both wide eyed and frowning. Towards the end of her life, a 1965 CBC documentary and a feature in the Toronto Star newspaper gave Lewis national celebrity. Most recently, a feature film based on her life, "Maudie", was released in the spring 2017. Starring Ethan Hawke and Sally Hawkins, the film captures the essence of Lewis's constrained life and the paintings that allowed her imagination to escape its confines.
