Nestled (Tree Men Series) P. Roch Smith

22.5 × 7.5 × 4 inches
57.15 × 19.05 × 10.16 cm

Canadian sculptor P. Roch Smith is known for his thoughtful, often playful and imaginative sculptures. In this new series of exquisitely detailed bronze ‘Tree men’ he has once again combined the human figure with tree branches or twigs. Two nude male figures—their arms and legs replaced with fine tree branches stand, one above the other as if nestled in a tree. The casting for each piece is a delicate process as each wooden twig is replaced by bronze so each sculpture is one of a kind. “I saw that an interesting scale could be achieved by having small torsos become quite large figures by having the twigs/branches form the arms and legs. The figures seemed to inhabit the space between dream and reality where I could see tree people having all sorts of interesting interactions.” P. Roch Smith He received a BFA (Honours Sculpture) from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (ECIAD - 1997) and an MFA from York University (2003). A teacher as well as an artist, he has taught classes at the University of Waterloo, ECIAD and York University. He currently manages and operates the bronze and aluminum foundry at York University. Roch Smith has exhibited throughout Canada and in the US. P. Roch Smith’s work is included in private, corporate and museum collections.
