About Vista

In this playful and imaginative sculpture by Roch Smith a figure, cast in bronze sits on a high steel chair. The Canadian artist is known for his inspired sculptures that often tackle the big questions in life in a fun way. The scale of the small figure vs. the huge chair is a deliberate act intended to challenge the viewer to focus on the central serious theme. Base dimensions for sculpture are 24 x 24 inches.

“As with Deep Blue I am thinking that there is often the need to get an overall view of a situation or one’s environments – taking stock of the situation and having a quiet moment to ponder possibilities. We can’t sit on an extremely tall chair in real life to have this type of experience but in the world of my making it can happen.” Roch Smith

Roch Smith received a BFA (Honours Sculpture) from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (ECIAD - 1997) and an MFA from York University (2003). A teacher as well as an artist, he has taught classes at the University of Waterloo, ECIAD and York University.

He currently manages and operates the bronze and aluminum foundry at York University. Roch Smith has exhibited throughout Canada and in the US. His work is included in private, corporate and museum collections.
