The distinctive shape of a pansy in bright blue pops from the canvas in this engaging floral abstract by Vancouver artist, Pat Service.
Reminiscent of Andy Warhol, Service’s flowers are pared down to the essentials--simple shapes without leaves or stems. As an avid gardener and horticulturalist, Pat Service has painted florals throughout her career. This is one in a series.
“The flowers with their radiance and intensity initiate the act of putting paint on canvas but they don’t control the result. The result has more to do with the curious act of ‘painting’, playing with hue, surface texture and mark making.”
She acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of B.C. and later studied art at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. Service’s work is held in private collections in North America, Britain, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong.
