About Passing Blue

The Canadian landscape re-imagined in vivid colours and minimalist form is one of a series of paintings that celebrates the road trip created by Pat Service. Here, in deep blue, bright yellow, turquoise, black and red Service captures an image that suggests traveling down an open road out into the blue towards the distant mountains. Over the years many road trips down the trans-Canada highway have provided her with rich mental pictures of the simple beauty of that landscape. Here, Service has simplified the landscape to its elemental form—strong lines and simple shapes leaving the viewer with only the essential pictures we can all relate to.

“The road trip again becomes an excuse for the fun of putting strange marks, shapes, textures and colours together, to make something no-one has seen before.” Pat Service

She acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of B.C. and later studied art at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. Service’s work is held in private collections in North America, Britain, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
