It’s a classic pairing—red and black. This abstract painting by Pat Service is elegantly simple in form and bold in colour. Six different floral images in bright red appear in a curated composition. One of Service’s Black Velvet Series, the red contrasts beautifully with the velvety black background.
“I started with a black ground using paint that I mixed myself rather than using the pre-mixed blacks that you can buy. It was a lot of fun, trying to get the blacks really dark.” Pat Service
She acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of B.C. and later studied art at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland. Service’s work is held in private collections in North America, Britain, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong and in several museum collections around the world.
