About the Work

Murray's porcelain sculpture floats freely on a horizontal surface, evoking the abstracted notion of fragility and repose. Carefully balanced in it's shadows and form, this sculpture is a delicate and elegant furl. The surface color is a deep umber, achieved by glazing and firing the porcelain. Murray’s refined porcelain objects carry enormous beauty, power and meaning. Regarded as one of Canada’s finest ceramic artists, this Quebec resident has received many honours and awards. Murray’s pieces can be found in museums, collections and galleries worldwide -- the World Ceramic Foundation in Korea, the Museum of Ceramics in Italy, the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa, and the Official Residence of the Prime Minister in Canada and Canada House in London England. Her work was selected for the 5th World Ceramic Biennale 2009 Korea, Icheon and again in 2015. She was included in the Masterworks Ontario Crafts Council Travelling Exhibition, and her work was exhibited at the Jingdezhen International Ceramic Fair, Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum, China. Her work has been given to many dignitaries (such as US President George W. Bush and UN Secretary Kofi Annan) by the Canadian government. "Paula Murray has chosen the proverbial ditch, opted for a path that lies out along porcelain’s very fringes. She pushed the material’s tensile qualities way past their literal and figurative breaking points, and in the end created work of enormous beauty, power and meaning." – Gil McElroy
