About Vice and Virtue

At once both classically romantic and nostalgic, Peter Hoffer’s landscapes are rich in atmosphere. In this pastoral painting, Hoffer uses two young trees to mark the foreground of a wide green country vista. The sky provides the background--a wash of blue and white clouds highlighted with teal and pink.

Hoffer’s superb work has often been compared to the great masters of landscape art—the 17th-century French artist Claude Lorrain and the 18th-century British painter, John Constable. Hoffer is known for using varnishing techniques popularized in the 19th century—layers of resin that add luminosity and enhance the traditional quality of his work.

"I love landscape painting and one of the reasons I continue to do landscape painting is that these paintings are nowhere specific. I wanted to do the landscape in a manner in which it is personified. Where the tree becomes the individual, even playing on some clichés." Peter Hoffer

He holds an MFA. from Concordia University and degrees from the University of Guelph and OCAD University. Hoffer has lived and worked in Toronto, New York City, Paris, Montreal, and Berlin. He has exhibited widely at art fairs in Basel, Toronto, New York, Stockholm, London, Milan, Amsterdam and Hong Kong. His paintings are held in many private, corporate, and public collections.
