About 2020

An imposing figure of a person standing, arms raised, hands on head, as if in turmoil is the latest subject of the inventive Canadian sculptor R. Clarke Ellis. Is this a witty comment on the tough year that 2020 has been? Constructed of laser cut steel and painted black, the sculpture absorbs light and casts its own curious shadows. Clarke Ellis’s work integrates minimalist forms with playful, even theatrical themes. He holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He began his career as an instructor at NSCAD before completing a degree in education from Queen's University. Ellis has had a successful career as a secondary school art and welding teacher. He returned to the studio seven years ago.
