Interloper R. Clarke Ellis

Painted Steel
74 × 32 × 20 inches
187.96 × 81.28 × 50.8 cm

Toronto artist Robert Clarke Ellis creates expressive outdoor sculptures in minimalist form. Using abstract shapes forged from steel…half-moons for heads and long curved stands resembling figures, two of three pieces face one another…the third—the interloper is turned away. (An interloper is someone who tries to become involved in a situation they don’t belong in.) The bright colours in turquoise, pink, purple, royal blue, red and yellow add pop art appeal and a playful note to the work. “The interaction (internal dialogue) between the sculpture and the spectator becomes at once personal and universal. This becomes the beginning for a new dialogue, event, or memory.” Clarke Ellis He has an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD). He began his career as an instructor at NSCAD before completing a degree in education from Queen's University.
