About Untitled

He was known as the ‘white painter’. Ronald Bloore is considered one of Canada’s preeminent abstract artists. Known for his remarkable ‘white-on-white’ paintings, Bloore was inspired early in his career to create works devoid of any other colours. During his studies in Greece and Egypt, he was struck by the ethereal, bright white light that played off the clean, simple lines of the architecture there. Untitled with its sparing bold imagery in white on a white background is a fine example of his classic work.

“For many, many years I didn’t use what’s known as color. But I had at one time up to forty different tubes of white on my painting table, so I was seeing color all the time.” Ronald Bloore

Born in Brampton, Ontario Bloore obtained a BA in Art and Archaeology from the University of Toronto in1949 and pursued further studies at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. He received an MA from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri in the fifties where he also worked as an instructor. Bloore also studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and received honorary doctorates from York University and the University of Regina. He taught art at many Canadian universities and has had many notable public commissions. Ronald Bloore is a member of the Order of Canada.
