In Spectrum, five circular arms of coloured stained glass appear to hover in motion like a giant colour wheel. Reminiscent of the minimalist work of the American artist, Ellsworth Kelly, Van Der Hout is interested in the aura created by stained glass, even in secular work. With a background in photography, Van Der Hout's sculptural works reference the camera's use of light and motion. Motion is suggested by the structure of the sculptures and light is cast through its many lenses, traveling across the ground throughout the day as the sun moves. “From a young age, I always wanted to create. Whether it was taking apart tv sets or creating installations out of old lightbulbs, I always had a project.” Ryan Van Der Hout Van Der Hout is a graduate of Ryerson's photography program. His photo-based work has been exhibited in the U.K., New York and in Canada. This sculpture is also available in varying sizes and colours by commission. The sculptures can be lit at night from multiple directions to turn any location into a light installation.
