About the Work
A sun dissolves into threads of gold against pools of dark and light in this photo-based image. The gold imagery is created by precise, laser-cut perforations that reveal the gold leaf layered behind the image. This work is 2 in an edition of 15. The frame on this work is a pewter colour measuring 20.25 x 20.25 inches. Ryan Van Der Hout's photo-based work has been exhibited across Canada, the U.K. and in New York, most notably as part of the AGO’s Collector’s series, as a featured Contact exhibition and Flash Forward 2016. His work has been supported by the Ontario Arts Council. Ryan is a graduate of Ryerson's photography program. His work has been published in The Huffington Post, CBC online, and Readers Digest. In 2017, he won the Emerging Photographer Award from the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, for his laser cut pigment print with gold leaf, Before the Storm.
