About After Picasso

Canadian artist Pat Service grew up surrounded by the towering forests and mountains of her Vancouver Island home. Trees have long been an inspiration for her paintings. In this abstract, one of a series called ‘Trees and Nests,’ two trees sit in the middle of the canvas pared down to simple shapes. Nests and leaves in peach, orange, lime green and yellow colours pop against the neutral background. The title refers to a favourite Picasso painting that used similar brush strokes. Service uses thinned out acrylic paint which gives her work the appearance of a watercolour.

“When I was starting out, although not detailed, I tried to get a realistic representation of them. (trees) Later in my career I became more interested in getting the essence of them only; they became structural supports for my drawing and colour adventures.”
