About History Revisited 1/10

Shani Mootoo grew up in this house in Trinidad. She returned as an adult and created a photographic memoir of its interior in her ‘History Revisited’ series. Her images of these rooms are not curated. This is the foyer. A book shelf cluttered with a variety of objects sits in the center frame. Family portraits hang above it on the wall, and the viewer sees a glimpse of two other rooms: dark wood cabinets in the dining room, a mannequin in a bedroom. Mootoo’s photos are nostalgic in that they chronicle how time and the generations who have lived here have transformed these spaces.

“It is there in that house that I see my roots and I wanted to record the marks on it before time takes it away forever.” Shani Mootoo
