About The Sum of All Parts No 23

In this bold abstract composition by Montreal-based artist Shireen Kamran rich, dark colours—charcoal blue and ochre contrast with muted whites and pale yellow. Kamran’s work—in form and colour is influenced by the paintings of fabled abstract artists such as De Kooning and Picasso. The title of this piece refers to the idea that a combination of parts can work together to create something more powerful than might be achieved by individual elements. Kamran honours her Pakistani heritage in her paintings and often references a form of Islamic mysticism called Sufi. One of a series composed of pigments and acrylic on canvas.
“I am very inspired by Sufi culture, a constant thread in my work, this concept of Sufi philosophy, reading Rumi etc. I don’t paint in the traditional way–it’s how I express it on canvas.” Shireen Kamran
She received a BSc. degree from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan and a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal.
Her work is held in private collections in Canada and abroad.
