About Uwaysi #5

With bold gestural brushstrokes and an earthy colour palette, Shireen Kamran’s abstract work pays homage to her Pakistani heritage.
Inspired by the teachings of Sufism—a form of Islamic mysticism, Kamran’s expressive paintings complete with symbolic markings are rendered in a melange of ochre, black, gray-blues and white.
Uwaysi is the name of the mystic who attained illumination on his own, through self-discovery without the aid of a guide or mentor.

“I am very inspired by Sufi culture, a constant thread in my work, this concept of Sufi philosophy, reading Rumi etc. I don’t paint in the traditional way, how I express it on canvas.” Shireen Kamran

Born in Lahore, Pakistan, she received a BSc. degree from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan and a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal. Her work is held in private collections in Canada and abroad.
