A glowering charcoal, white, twilight blue and violet sky descends on a black shadowed mountain over the yellow and red lights of a town in this small encaustic painting on paper. The vigorous brushstrokes used in this work reflect Andrew's "distilling process" an emotive technique that pushes the forms created towards abstraction. This painting is framed and behind glass. Encaustic is an ancient waxed based medium employed by the Greeks and Romans in the first centuries AD in painting portraits and decorative panels. This medium, melted before application, can be labor-intensive and depends on speed and timing in its use. Andrew graduated with his MFA from Newcastle University in northeast England. He has exhibited widely with 27 solo shows in the UK and Canada. He has received two Ontario Arts Council awards and won landscape competitions including the Laing National Landscape Competition and the Lawrence Atwell Award both in the UK. Andrew's work is in corporate, public and private collections including that of actor Mel Gibson and Her Majesty The Queen in Right. His work was featured on the cover of the Canadian band Tragically Hip's album Day for Night.
