This sculpture by Toronto’s Sophie DeFrancesca is a rendition of a pretty party dress. It's figure-hugging golden lace bodice with its spaghetti straps and ballerina knee-length skirt is adorned with Swarovski crystals and mounted on a dress-maker’s stand. Her work pays homage to the glamorous couture of the early twentieth century when her own mother and aunts were inspired by the iconic women who wore these stylish clothes. This delicate figurative form is created out of stainless-steel and aluminum mesh, then coated in latex and automotive paint. Shadows cast by the dress are part of the installation. “For me, clothing isn’t just a fashion, it can be loaded with significance and meaning and memory.” Sophie DeFrancesca She graduated from the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) in 1990. While working in the commercial arts she developed a body of sculptural artwork. Her artwork has been published in Elle Magazine, Architectural Digest and Hello Magazine. She has appeared in many solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the U.S. DeFrancesca's artwork is held in private and corporate collections.
