About the Work
With the addition of scarlet paint and dangling, ruby red swarovski crystals, the artist has transformed galvanized steel mesh, wire and liquid latex into a delightful and curvy spaghetti-strap cocktail dress. This lively sculpture that may evoke thoughts of 1950s Paris nightlife or Hollywood glamour is unwearable. The playful little red dress that conjures up an ideal and exotic life may also signal the gap between women's fashion and reality. The work is suspended by thin wires from the ceiling. Sophie DeFrancesca graduated from the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) in 1990. Her work has been published in Elle Magazine, Architectural Digest, Hello Magazine and included in many solo and group exhibitions in Toronto, Montreal as well as in the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff and the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln. DeFrancesca's artwork is included in private and corporate collections.
