Elegant 1950's style cocktail dress, recalling the glamour of Marilyn Munroe and Grace Kelly, mounted on a stand like a dress-maker's "judy". Toronto-based artist, Sophie DeFrancesca graduated from the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) in 1990. While working in various commercial art fields for over a decade, she started to develop a body of personal artwork with a keen focus on sculpture. In the early 2000's, wire mesh emerged as an important material for DeFrancesca. Sheathes of galvanized steel mesh allowed her to shape human scale forms, rendering hard materials into ethereal concoctions. These sculptures resonated with audiences, and opportunities to exhibit came her way. Her fine art practice soon became her primary focus. Sophie's workspace in Leslieville on Toronto's east side offers the artist refuge to explore cultural and social phenomenon in all its evocations. Her sculptures have earned her gallery representation, and group and solo exhibitions at prestigious venues including Toronto, Montreal, New York, and Miami. They have also been exhibited publicly at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff, and the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln. DeFrancesca's work has captured the attention of collectors around the world. Her forms are rendered out of galvanized and stainless steel, and then coated in latex and automotive paint. This exquisite, stylized gown is plays with memories of fashion, elegance, movie stars and a sort of unattainable beauty. It is adorned with Swarovski crystals.
