About the Work
Galvanized steel mesh, wire and brilliant turquoise liquid latex are transformed into a life sized trophy head of a buck in this wall mounted sculpture. In mythology, the stag may represent the faithful, true-blue protector, messenger and intuitive. Its image often appears on family or house crests. This cross-cultural symbol here intersects with the artist's playful commentary on the practice of hunting for sport. Sophie DeFrancesca graduated from the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) in 1990. Her work has been published in Elle Magazine, Architectural Digest, Hello Magazine and included in many solo and group exhibitions in Toronto, Montreal as well as in the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff and the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln. DeFrancesca's artwork is included in private and corporate collections.
