This sculpture by Toronto’s Sophie DeFrancesca is a rendition of an elegant little black dress. It's figure-hugging lace bodice and flounced knee-length skirt is adorned with Swarovski crystals and mounted on a dress-maker’s stand. Her work pays homage to the glamorous couture of the early twentieth century when her own mother and aunts were inspired by the iconic women who wore these stylish clothes. This form is created out of stainless-steel and aluminum mesh, then coated in latex and automotive paint. “For me, clothing isn’t just a fashion, it can be loaded with significance and meaning and memory.” Sophie DeFrancescaShe graduated from the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) in 1990.
