This sculpture by Toronto’s Sophie DeFrancesca is a rendition of an elegant little black dress. It's figure-hugging lace bodice and flounced knee-length skirt is adorned with Swarovski crystals and mounted on a dress-maker’s stand. Her work pays homage to the glamorous couture of the early twentieth century when her own mother and aunts were inspired by the iconic women who wore these stylish clothes. This form is created out of stainless-steel and aluminum mesh, then coated in latex and automotive paint. “For me, clothing isn’t just a fashion, it can be loaded with significance and meaning and memory.” Sophie DeFrancescaShe graduated from the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) in 1990. While working in the commercial arts she developed a body of sculptural artwork. Her artwork has been published in Elle Magazine, Architectural Digest and Hello Magazine and included in many solo and group exhibitions in Toronto and Montreal as well as in the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in Banff and the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln. DeFrancesca's artwork is held in private and corporate collections.
