Passages of gold, orange and teal are balanced with bold curated strokes of blue black in this modern oil on canvas by Walter Yarwood. Yarwood was a member of Painters 11 that formed in 1953 to promote abstraction in Canadian art. This aptly titled painting Autumn Woods from 1957 was created in the heyday of the group that disbanded in 1960. The painting was photographed on the set of a TV program with Canadian actor Lorne Greene. Yarwood was a member of the Ontario Society of Artists, the Art Directors Club of Toronto and the Canadian Group of Painters. He was an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Among Yarwood's important commissions are sculptures at Sydney Smith Hall, University of Toronto; Winnipeg International Airport; York University, Toronto; and Expo ’67 Montreal. His work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Museum London, the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the Agnes Etherington Art Centre.
