About Anomaly

A circle of glossy stainless-steel balls creates ‘Anomaly,’ a compelling contemporary indoor sculpture. This is Alexander Caldwell. The Canadian artist has garnered an international reputation for his superbly crafted and often playful work—this is the indoor version of a large-scale sculpture that graces the sidewalk in downtown Calgary. The minimalist form is accented by a shiny dark paint; the spheres act as mirrors reflecting and distorting the images that surround them.

“The grand wreath of gleaming steel spheres that seem to bubble one from another in a carefully balanced circle — suggesting small molecular systems, cloud formations or planetary activity — is one of Calgary artist Alex Caldwell’s most impressive projects to date.” (Avenue Calgary Magazine March 2021)

Alexander Caldwell was born in Whitehorse, Yukon. He studied with Artist Katie Ohe at Alberta College of Art (now called The Alberta University of the Arts) graduating in 1985.
He established Alexander Caldwell Design Ltd, in a warehouse that he converted into a studio and foundry. His work has been exhibited in Calgary, Miami, Chicago, Scotland, and Switzerland. It is widely collected in both private and private collections throughout Canada and internationally including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Disney Tokyo, the W Hotel Korea, and Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts. Caldwell lives and works in Calgary.
